I’ll have a side of crap service, skip the poncey please!

It’s one of those weeks where I literally have something on every night (socially, I mean!) and even some mornings … so it’s eating out, dinners, breakfasts, etc. Not good for the body, but more about that later …
I have to share last night, and this morning with you, and no-one has paid me here! For the record, it’s just my experiences …
Last night I was invited to Buds on the Bay … for those of you who have never been, Buds is a little “dive” – and I say this with all due respect – seriously off the beaten track – off the harbour – but not the touristy part, if you know what I mean! You definitely need to print the map off their website and follow that, rather then allowing your GPS to direct you – it’s that far off the beaten track! And if you think you’re in the wrong place entirely, you’ve probably just found it 🙂 So last night they had quite a special event, they had managed to secure Barry Thompson for the evening, Barry is a seriously good guitarist, performer, singer even by non-Durban standards, so for Durban, this was quite a treat. They had a 4 course set menu for R150! Seriously yummy! Prawn Bisque, then a spicy spinach & cheese deep fried thingy, then a seriously fabulous Surf & Turf, and cheesecake. It sounds really ordinary, but was anything but that! I thoroughly enjoyed the food, and I’m quite a Foodie so that’s saying something! With my cocktail and a tip, the evening cost me R200 AND I got Barry Thompson on top of that! This is a definite repeater! And if you ever want a seriously chilled evening with fabulous food in a relaxed little dive where no-one gives a shit about service, or fussiness, but in a good way, visit Buds!
Okay, so now this morning I go for breakfast with my good old mate M, and we decide to try out this new Boutique Hotel’s restaurant thingy for brekkie … 64 on Gordon on Gordon Road! Now, this breakfast couldn’t be any more different to my experience of last night! It’s poncey and pretentious, and EXPENSIVE! M and I had the French Toast with Syrup and Bacon (a favourite of mine everywhere else), I had a latte and she had a cappuccino. Now, bearing in mind this is Durban, so things are cheaper, so we’re spoiled. But normally anywhere else you go, French Toast is like the cheapest brekkie you can get – Mug and Bean’s sets you back about R30 now I think, and the portion is generous, and in Durbs you can expect to pay about R15 for a Cappuccino. Well, at 64 on Gordon, the French Toast was tiny to start with, with literally 1 piece of back bacon, and the tiniest little dribble of syrup in an artsy fartsy Z across the whole lot! Really not special! A serious step down from even Mug and Bean, which is saying something right?! Then the bill arrives and it’s just under R170!!!!!!!!!! WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was so shocked I didn’t even check the breakdown, but that is almost double what you’d pay anywhere else for the same brekkie, and it would probably be better elsewhere! And the service was annoying!!! About 5 different people kept interrupting our conversation to ask how we were doing and if we were happy liek every 5 minutes! Service taken to the other extreme! I would not recommend this place to anyone!
Moral of the story …
Give me down-to-earth, crap-service-but-you-don’t-care-‘cos-the-vibe-is-so-good Buds any day, I’ll skip the pretentious-but-disappointing 64 on Gordon thanks!
